Design

I treat landscape design like creating art with plants - the color of blooms and foliage are my painters palette.  The habit of each plant and the shapes of flowers and leaves form the texture and layers of the living sculpture that is a garden.  I generate hand-drawn, to-scale planting plans and sitemaps that are labors of love, conceived with precise attention to detail.  From editing existing gardens and restoring neglected, outdated landscapes to new construction - I welcome the chance to improve and beautify any space.  My approach is site specific, client specific, and rooted in what thrives in our unique region.  I strive to design landscaping that benefits the local ecosystem, whether it's creating ample habitat for pollinators and birds, managing storm water run-off or complying with fire-wise standards.  My goal is to remain harmonious with the native environment of each property, as well as compliment the style and architecture of existing structures.  Initiating creative solutions for problem zones, that often embrace the restrictions of a site, is integral to my process.  Coming from a plant-centric perspective, I aspire to achieve the perfect balance of color, texture and contrast throughout the seasons, and I firmly believe in the right plant for the right place.

I formulate extensive plant lists to work from, bearing in mind all aspects of a site; sun, soil, animal pressure, style and color - always reflecting clients' needs, limitations and desires. When it's time for installation I personally lay out plants, fine-tuning the design to fit the space perfectly. For certain situations, like editing established gardens, I circumvent the drawing process and go straight to plant placement with a carefully selected plant palette...I am very proficient in designing on the fly.

I cater to both residential and commercial projects, large and small.  I enjoy the challenges of enhancing every space - from large properties with acreage down to the focused restraint of a single foundation bed or grouping of containers.

Consultation

All design projects start here, but for certain jobs a simple consultation is sufficient. This can include:

  • brainstorming, finding direction, creating or clarifying a vision
  • advise on how to approach a space or proceed on a project
  • creating step-by-step plans
  • plant lists
  • for existing gardens: plant identification and assessment, editing, maintenance how-to and tips on restorative pruning
